Three-time champion Serena Williams downed Svetlana Kuznetsova 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 to reach the Australian Open semi-finals in a testing, heat-interrupted match.

Seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova, 23, beat fellow Russian and world number one Dinara Safina to win the French Open at Roland Garros. Kuznetsova came through 6-4, 6-2, for her second major title, following victory at the 2004 US Open.

The 23-year-old Safina, who was well below her best, slammed her racquet into the dirt in frustration after making her seventh double-fault of the day on match point.

Dinara Safina has now lost in the French Open final for two successive years, and earlier she was also beaten by Serena Williams in Australian Open final.

Svetlana Kuznetsova has been a fixture in top level women's tennis game since winning the US Open at the age of 19. She had struggled hard to live up to that reputation, but was beaten by Justine Henin in the 2006 Paris final.

Though both the players had nervous starts, as both wanted to win the title, Kuznetsova was more adventurous and rushed to the net quite frequently while looking solid from the baseline. But it was Safina who missed the chance to move ahead.

Svetlana Kuznetsova commiserated with her compatriot before climbing through the stands to begin the real celebrations with her supporters.
