Spanish actress Penélope Cruz, 35, who starred in several American films such as Blow, Vanilla Sky, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and Nine, and best known for her work with acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar in Broken Embraces, Volver and All About My Mother, is nominated for her third Academy Award in 2010 for her role as Carla Albanese in the film version of the musical ‘Nine’. Cruz had already received her Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role Academy Award for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona during the 81st Annual Academy Awards held at Kodak Theatre on February 22, 2009 in Los Angeles, California.

So far Cruz has won many prestigious awards such as three Goyas, two European Film Awards, and the Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2009, she won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, a Goya, and a BAFTA for her role in Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She is Spain's first female Oscar winner. Cruz is the sixth Hispanic person to win an Oscar after José Ferrer, Rita Moreno, Benicio del Toro (Puerto Rico), Anthony Quinn (Mexico), and Javier Bardem (Spain). Her 2010 Oscar nomination is only the third time in the history of the Oscars where the winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress was nominated for Best Supporting Actress again in the following year, the other actresses being Estelle Parsons (1967 and 1968) and Lee Grant (1975 and 1976).

On this year’s nomination Penelope was quoted by a website, “I had a new phone line installed, so almost no one had the new number of my house. Only my agent had it and she was in Australia. So they had to get hold of her first and I found out an hour later… I had 19 missed calls and 120 emails and text messages. So for two hours, I was returning calls.”

Cruz, a vegetarian since 2000, speaks four languages: Spanish, Italian, French and English. She has a younger brother Eduardo who is a singer and a younger sister Mónica. She was raised as a Catholic but she is closest to Buddhism. After shooting for ‘Vanilla Sky’ with Tom Cruise, they had a three-year relationship till January 2004. In that period, she and Cruise were seen visiting Church of Scientology locations in Hollywood, and it was speculated that Cruise had convinced Cruz to join Scientology.

After filming Sahara in February 2005 Cruz began dating actor Matthew McConaughey, and in May 2006, they released a joint statement to People that they ‘have decided to take time off as a couple.’ In late 2006, they announced that they were ‘no longer intimate and separating was the best thing to do at this time’. Following that Cruz has been dating actor Javier Bardem since 2007.
