Osacar Wars: The Hurt Locker Vs Avatar

American film director Kathryn Bigelow, 58, is a hot favourite for this year’s Academy Awards, as a director for her film The Hurt Locker. She was the first woman to win the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Motion Pictures for The Hurt Locker for which she also won the Best Film and Best Director Awards at the 2010 British Academy Film Awards. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe. She is the first female ever to win a BAFTA Award for Best Direction and the fourth female ever to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director after Lina Wertmüller (Seven Beauties - 1976), Jane Campion (The Piano - 1993) and Sofia Coppola ( Lost in Translation - 2003).
Bigelow was married to fellow director James Cameron from 1989 to 1991. Both Bigelow and Cameron were nominated for Best Director for films released in 2009, Cameron's nomination being for Avatar.
