With the sun shining at Roland Garros, the world number one Serena Williams demolished German world number 77 Julia Goerges 6-1, 6-1 in just 55 minutes in a second round match. She will face on Saturday Russian 29th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the third round for a place in the last 16, as she bids to lift the trophy for the first time in nine years.
Earlier, at the French Open, Serena Williams defeated Stefanie Voegele 7-6(2), 6-2 in the first round. She also is playing doubles with Venus Williams as the top seeds. They are scheduled to play Daniela Hantuchova and Caroline Wozniacki in the second round.
Once known for her unusual and colorful outfits on court, Williams has also presented new designs off-court. She formerly had a special line with Puma and currently has a line with Nike. The deal, signed in April 2004 with Nike is worth $40 million, it has been reported. Since 2004, she has also been running her own line of designer apparel line, ‘Aneres’ (‘Serena’ spelled backwards). In 2009 she launched a signature collection of handbags and jewelry.
To move on to the fourth round for the first time Maria Kirilenko beat defending champion and fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova out of the French Open on Friday, at the third round stage. The sixth seed Kuznetsova lost (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) to 30th-seed Kirilenko.
Earler Kirilenko defeated Karolina Sprem in the first round match (7-6(5) 6-4). In the second round, she defeated Yvonne Meusburger (6-3 6-3). Kirilenko will now meet 17th seeded-Italian Francesca Schiavone for a place in the quarterfinals.
Defending champion Svetlana Kuznetsova crashed out of the French Open on Friday, at the third round stage, beaten in three sets by fellow Russian Maria Kirilenko. The sixth seed Kuznetsova lost (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) to 30th-seeded Kirilenko.
"I didn't come here with my best game, but I gave my all and I fought all I could," said Kuznetsova, adding, "You cannot play great all the time. It's up and downs. I haven't been playing well this claycourt season or this season. It happens and I'll be back. It's just a matter of time."
The former world number one Maria Sharapova will contest the four-time champion and 22nd seed Justine Henin for a place in the last 16 on Saturday. The 12th seed Sharapova completed a victory in straight sets in the second round over Henin's Belgian compatriot Kirsten Flipkens.
Maria Sharapova, who seems to shadow Henin's efforts for a fifth Roland Garros crown said, "I'm looking forward to it… We've had some great matches in the past. We've had some battles and I've had some tough losses and some great wins, so I look forward to this one."
The Siberian who trails Henin 6-3 in head-to-head career matches, and who last week came through five matches in Strasbourg to win her first career title on red clay, and has won a couple of rounds in the French Open, will meet the greatest dirt-baller of her generation, Justine Henin.
Sharapova is a French Open away from a full set of grand slam titles. Earlier she defeated Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens 6-3, 6-3. It will be their first meeting since Henin returned to professional tennis early this year.

The four-time champion and 22nd seed Justine Henin and former world number one Maria Sharapova will contest for a place in the last 16 on Saturday after comfortably winning second-round matches that had been held over because of rain on Thursday. Looking forward to a fifth Roland Garros crown, Henin handed a straight 6-3, 6-3 defeat to the Czech Klara Zakopalova, and the 12th seed Sharapova completed a victory in straight sets in the second round over Henin's Belgian compatriot Kirsten Flipkens.
"Playing again in front of the Paris crowd and all the Belgian supporters warms my heart," said Henin, who returned to tennis earlier this year after retiring in 2008. Her last visit to Roland Garros in 2007 won her fourth title. "I've missed it and the sensations are coming back bit by bit," she said.
In the French Open third-round matches, the Russian fifth seed Elena Dementieva, who was a losing finalist here in 2004, pulled out a grueling 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 6-4 win over Canada's Aleksandra Wozniak. Dementieva sank to her knees in relief at the end of the 2-hour-43-minute match. She will have to tackle the South African qualifier Chanelle Scheepers, who is the first woman from South Africa to reach the last 16 here since Amanda Coetzer did it in 1997.

In the French Open, third seed Caroline Wozniacki reached the fourth round after winning 6-3, 6-4 against Romanian 31st seed Alexandra Dulgheru, who won in Warsaw last week. The 19-year-old Dane fought back from 3-1 down in the first set and 4-1 down in the second set to set up a last-16 clash with the Italian 14th seed Flavia Pennetta. Earlier, though troubled by injury, Wozniacki showed no signs of it when she demolished Russia's Alla Kudryavsteva (6-0 6-3) in the first round on Monday.

‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives’ (Lung Bunmi Raluek Chat) is a 2010 Thai language film directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It has won the Palme d'Or Award at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The story of the film centers on the last days in the life of Boonmee, who could clearly remember his previous lives while meditating. While trying to find out the reason for his illness, Boonmee explores his past lives, including the ghost of his dead wife and his lost son who has returned in a nonhuman form. The film’s plot has twists such as apparitions, out-of-body experiences, and similar occurrences. The film stars Thanapat Saisaymar (Uncle Boonmee), Jenjira Pongpas (Jen), Sakda Kaewbuadee (Thong), Natthakarn Aphaiwong (Huay, Boonmee's wife), Jeerasak Kulhong (Boonsong, Boonmee's son), Kanokporn Thongaram (Roong, Jen's friend) and other actors.
According to Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a man named Boonmee approached Phra Sripariyattiweti, the abbot of a Buddhist temple, claiming he could clearly remember his past lives while meditating. The abbot published a book called ‘A Man Who Can Recall His Past Lives’ in 1983. As Boonmee had already died the by the time Apichatpong read the book, based on the contents of the book, he wrote a screenplay, though some of the sub-stories in the film are his own inventions based on supernatural events.
Lindsay Lohan arrives in court for a probation status hearing related to her 2007 drunk-driving case in Beverly Hills. She had been ordered to appear before Judge Marsha Revel to explain allegations that she has not completed the alcohol education classes stipulated under the terms of her probation.
And finally when the ‘Mean Girls’ star Lindsay Lohan made her court date on Monday, a judge ruled that she must wear an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet.
Lohan, 23, appeared on Monday before Judge Marsha Revel of Los Angeles County Superior Court for a hearing related to her 2007 arrests on drunken driving and drug abuse charges. The judge had ordered for Lohan’s arrest on Thursday because she did not appear for a previous probation hearing. However, the warrant was subsequently revoked when Lohan, who was attending the Cannes Film Festival, said her passport had been stolen, and also posted a $100,000 bail.
On Monday, Judge Revel set a probation violation hearing of July 6 for the actress. The judge also offered to read Lohan a list of reasons why she was being fitted with the ankle bracelet and ordered her to undergo drug testing and alcohol education.
In 2007 Lohan was sentenced to three-year probation after her second DUI conviction, and she was ordered to complete a set of alcohol education classes, which apparently she did not complete. There was a status hearing last week which she missed because, she claimed her father, Michael, had her passport stolen by someone while she was partying in Cannes that left her with no option but to stay in France. She is also reported to have slammed her father, who had encouraged her to enter rehab, "He clearly isn't sane."
Lohan could have faced 180 days in jail if she was found in violation of her probation, though she said she did not understand why, as she claimed to have been more than compliant with everything having to do with the court orders.
Also there were photos of her being circulated allegedly posing next to several lines of cocaine, about which Lohan explained fans pulled her into the room for a photo shoot and she was unaware of the surroundings, and went on to say that the pictures a were a ‘set up’. Lohan, along with her friends, were seen having a ‘white powder’ during an after-party in Cannes, France.

Mirren, DBE, has won an Academy Award, four SAG Awards, four BAFTAs, three Golden Globes and four Emmy Awards during her long career.
In 1984, Mirren won Best Actress Award for her role in the film Cal at the Cannes Film Festival and the 1985 Evening Standard British Film Awards.

In 2001 she was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her performance in Gosford Park.
In 2002 she received the SAG Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Gosford Park.
Mirren is the first female actress to be nominated for three acting performances at the Golden Globe Awards in the same year. She won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Leading Role in the movie drama category for Stephen Frears' The Queen in 2006, along with two nominations in the Actress in a Mini-series or TV Movie category for Elizabeth I, and Prime Suspect: Final Act. Mirren is the third actor to win two Golden Globes in the same year, and the first ever to win for both leading roles in TV and film in the same year. She is one of only three actresses - the first was Liza Minnelli in 1973 and then decades later Helen Hunt - to win a Golden Globe, an Oscar and an Emmy for performances given in the same year.
Along with the Golden Globe, Mirren's acclaimed performance in The Queen won her the 2007 Academy Award for Best Actress. She won the Best Actress award at the 2009 Rome International Film Festival for her performance as Tolstoy's wife in The Last Station.
In 2007 Mirren became an Honorary Patron of the University Philosophical Society at Trinity College Dublin.
About her amazing look-alike wax figure at Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, London, she said, ''My husband wants to marry her; I'm much more argumentative than she is… It's like becoming a Dame really; a great honour.''
The £150,000 model placed in the ''A-list party'' area of Tussauds took four months to make, and it has been dressed in one of Dame Mirren's dresses, a floor-length black Asprey dress which she wore at the Crime Thriller Awards, and teamed with six-inch black heels.
Liz Edwards of Madame Tussauds said about the actress, ''Dame Helen has had a phenomenal career and has frequently topped the visitor surveys we run to find out who the public want to see at Madame Tussauds.''
After the 11 May 2010 morning's launch of the wax figure, Dame Mirren and her husband Taylor Hackford headed to Cannes for the film festival to promote their new film Love Ranch, a 2010 drama directed by Hackford, starring Helen Mirren and Joe Pesci.
