Red Carpet: Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives

‘Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives’ (Lung Bunmi Raluek Chat) is a 2010 Thai language film directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. It has won the Palme d'Or Award at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. The story of the film centers on the last days in the life of Boonmee, who could clearly remember his previous lives while meditating. While trying to find out the reason for his illness, Boonmee explores his past lives, including the ghost of his dead wife and his lost son who has returned in a nonhuman form. The film’s plot has twists such as apparitions, out-of-body experiences, and similar occurrences. The film stars Thanapat Saisaymar (Uncle Boonmee), Jenjira Pongpas (Jen), Sakda Kaewbuadee (Thong), Natthakarn Aphaiwong (Huay, Boonmee's wife), Jeerasak Kulhong (Boonsong, Boonmee's son), Kanokporn Thongaram (Roong, Jen's friend) and other actors.

According to Apichatpong Weerasethakul, a man named Boonmee approached Phra Sripariyattiweti, the abbot of a Buddhist temple, claiming he could clearly remember his past lives while meditating. The abbot published a book called ‘A Man Who Can Recall His Past Lives’ in 1983. As Boonmee had already died the by the time Apichatpong read the book, based on the contents of the book, he wrote a screenplay, though some of the sub-stories in the film are his own inventions based on supernatural events.
